“I remember being invited to Lazada’s ‘Party of the Universe’ event about four years ago. The spectacular gala dinner-slash-networking night was attended by many popular influencers, top agencies and A+ celebrities. I had a modest number of followers on Instagram at the time, and I would get invited by brands like Lazada to attend such events from time to time. As luck would have it, I ended up as a winner in a dancing challenge and won an iPhone X, which I had to collect in person from Lazada’s office in downtown Jakarta.

What happened next was pure serendipity. As I waited for my prize at the reception, I started a conversation with Maya, the project lead of the event, and asked if there was a job vacancy. I thought, none of my friends work in eCommerce, so it would be so cool for me to be the first one. Maya said that the company was indeed looking for someone to do offline marketing engagement. She said: ‘I’m sure you can do this job. You have a great network and can surely pull off events that gather people from different communities.’ The next thing I know, I was filling out an application, which led to a series of interviews, including with Lazada’s chief marketing officer. I never thought I would pass any of the rounds, but before I even realized what I was doing, I was hired.

Today, I lead a team of more than a dozen people. We produce various shoppertainment programs for LazLive, Lazada’s in-app livestreaming channel. Together, we conduct big broadcasting projects and create high-quality content for consumers and Lazada’s brand partners. We also run special programmes on LazLive that attract millions of viewers during Lazada’s shopping festivals. These include The Bi99est Show, Lazada Super Show and Lazada Grand Show, just to name a few.

Every morning I wake up and still think this is a dream – to be able to create programmes that entertain people and help our sellers boost their sales. Thinking back, the real prize I won that day at the Lazada event was not my iPhone (that was awesome though!) but a golden opportunity of a lifetime to work at one of the world’s largest eCommerce companies!”
